Dr McElholm graduated with Distinction in Medicine and Surgery from Queen’s University of Belfast (QUB) in 1997.
He achieved Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 2002 and was awarded an MD for his research on Reflux Oesophagitis, Barrett’s Oesophagus and Oesophageal Cancer at QUB in 2012.
He was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in the UK in 2013 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2014.
Dr McElholm completed specialist training in Gastroenterology in the UK, followed by two Interventional Endoscopy Fellowships at Royal Perth Hospital WA, and Royal Bournemouth Hospital, England, being appointed a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist in Liverpool, UK, in 2012.
In 2013 he moved to Perth and holds public posts at Fiona Stanley, Rockingham and Fremantle Hospitals. He was appointed a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist in the NHS in Liverpool, UK, in 2012, and moved to Perth in 2013.
